A significant week for serious crime in Tasmania, with a murder charge upgraded following a fatal assault in the north, a targeted armed assault in Hobart’s New Town, and an arsonist finally brought to justice after an 11-fire spree spanning almost a year. Here’s a rundown of the key crime and public safety stories making headlines around the state.
A serious assault at a private residence in Railton took a tragic turn this week. A 42-year-old Tarleton man was originally detained and charged with causing bodily harm after allegedly assaulting a 48-year-old Railton man on Wednesday morning. The victim was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital, where he later died of his injuries — prompting police to upgrade the charge to murder.
A woman was assaulted with a baseball bat on Park Street, New Town, near the Tower Motel, in an incident police believe was targeted, with the parties known to each other. Two men allegedly drove up to the woman in a white 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander, got out, assaulted her and stole property before fleeing. Detectives from South East CIB have arrested a 35-year-old man over the incident, with investigations continuing to locate the second man involved.
After an in-depth investigation spanning more than a year, a 29-year-old Nile man has been charged over at least 11 separate deliberately lit fires stretching from Perth to Ulverstone between August 2025 and April 2026 — including a significant blaze at Breadalbane that destroyed power infrastructure and caused local outages. He was already facing arson charges over a fire at a Perth public toilet block earlier in the year, and will now face eight additional charges. He’s due back in court on 24 September.
Police are calling for public assistance after a structure fire at a vacant house on Raluana Lane, New Town, in the early hours of Thursday morning. Tasmania Fire Service contained the blaze, but the property sustained significant damage. Investigators suspect the fire may have been deliberately lit, with a witness reporting two tall men on bicycles in the area shortly afterwards.
Two people were arrested following a string of incidents in the small Central Highlands town of Ouse. Police allege the pair attempted to break into a business before breaking into a nearby convenience store and stealing cash. Their getaway vehicle then crashed into an embankment on the Lyell Highway, after which they allegedly entered a nearby property and tried to steal an ATV — leaving the resident with minor facial injuries. A 21-year-old Franklin woman and a 26-year-old Kingston man were arrested walking along Ellendale Road in the early hours of the morning.
